Baljendra S. Kapoor, MD, FSIR
Chair, 2023 Program

Baljendra Kapoor, MD FSIR is the Division Director, Vascular Interventional Radiology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. Previously, he was the staff interventional radiologist at the Cleveland Clinic and professor of radiology at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, obtained his medical diploma from the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. He completed his residency training in general surgery at University Hospital in Varanasi, India and diagnostic radiology residency at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Following residency training, Dr. Kapoor completed subspecialty training in interventional radiology at the University of Minnesota and hospitals, Minneapolis. Dr. Kapoor has also practiced in Alabama and in Saskatchewan, Canada. Dr. Kapoor is fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology, the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe and American College of Radiology. His areas of clinical and research interest include minimally invasive interventions of the gastrointestinal tract and Dr. Kapoor is founder of the American Society of Digestive Disease Interventions, a society dedicated to a multidisciplinary approach in the management of gastrointestinal diseases and interventions. Dr. Kapoor also serves as co-editor-in-chief of Digestive Disease Interventions, a quarterly journal.

Erik N.K. Cressman, MD, PhD, FSIR
Chair, 2023 Workshop Program

Dr. Erik Cressman is an Associate Professor of Interventional Radiology at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Cressman received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Utah in 1989 and his Doctorate in Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1999. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at IU as well, where he and was the inaugural B. Leonard Holman Scholar. Dr. Cressman did his fellowship training in interventional radiology, also at Indiana University, after which he began his career at the University of Minnesota as an Assistant Professor in 2005 where he served as Fellowship Program Director.

In 2013, he joined UTMD Anderson Cancer Center and currently serves as a Research Advisor for the UTMDACC GSBS PhD Advisory Committee. He has served previously as Chair of the Society of Interventional Radiology Grants and Research Division, was elected a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology, is a past president of the Society of Thermal Medicine, and is a founding member of the Imaging Mass Spectrometry Society.

Gloria Salazar, MD, FSIR
Chair, 2023 Scientific Program

Gloria Salazar, MD, FSIR is certified by the American Board of Radiology, with added qualification in Vascular and Interventional Radiology. She is a Clinical Associate Professor of Radiology and the Chief of Vascular Interventional Radiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She trained in radiology at Universidade Federal de São Paulo and completed her fellowship in Vascular & Interventional Radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She first started her career working at Massachusetts General Hospital as an assistant radiologist (MGH). While at MGH, she became a driving force for women's health as she co-developed the Program for Fibroids, a multi-disciplinary clinic created to provide care for women with fibroids. She has continued to not only have a national impact, but also an international impact on the field of Interventional Radiology. She routinely speaks at worldwide conferences and continues to author numerous publications, allowing for the further development of the field of Interventional Radiology.

A specialist in women’s and venous interventional procedures, her clinical interests include Women’s Health, superficial/deep venous disease, pelvic venous disorders, and vascular malformations. She is currently the Chair of the Society of Interventional Radiology’s Women’s Health Clinical Council.

Bulent Arslan, MD, FSIR
Vice-Chair, 2023 Scientific Program

Dr. Bulent Arslan is a Professor of Radiology, Director, Vascular & Interventional Radiology, Associate Chair, Department of Radiology & Nuclear Medicine at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Arslan Graduated from the University of Marmara, Medical School Istanbul, Turkey. He finished his residency and fellowship training at University of Rochester, New York.

Dr. Arslan started the interventional oncology program at Moffitt Cancer Center by initiating radioembolization treatment as well as many other procedures such as Nanoknife ablation. In 2011 he performed the highest number of Therasphere treatments in the world. His current research interests include radioembolization, aortic and peripheral vascular interventions.

Kush R. Desai, MD, FSIR
Chair, 2023 Special Programs

Kush R Desai, MD, FSIR is an Interventional Radiologist and Associate Professor of Radiology, Surgery, and Medicine at Northwestern University. His primary research and clinical interests are in venous thromboembolic disease, deep venous thrombectomy/thrombolysis, reconstruction of chronic venous occlusions, IVC filter management/complex IVC filter retrieval, and interventional pulmonary embolism management.

He serves as the chair of the Society of Interventional Radiology’s venous clinical specialty council, and is a fellow of the society.  He serves as the national and global principal investigator for numerous clinical trials that are developing strategies and devices to treat deep venous disease. In addition, he serves as a reviewer for several journals, including Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, as a distinguished reviewer for Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders, and as a top reviewer for Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

Nadine Abi-Jaoudeh, MD, FSIR
Chair, 2022 Program

Dr. Abi-Jaoudeh is a professor of radiological sciences at the University of California Irvine with American and Canadian board certification in vascular and interventional radiology.

After earning her medical degree from the University of Montreal, she completed internship and residency at the University of Laval in Québec, and her fellowship in interventional radiology at the University of Virginia.She then joined National Institutes of Health as a staff clinician. During her time at the NIH, she was a principal and associate investigator on several human trials. She also completed multiple animal and translational studies.

She has authored multiple original manuscripts, book chapters and two patents related to imaging technology in the angiography suite. Her research interests include fusion and functional imaging during image guided procedures, innovative therapeutic methods to treat metastatic and primary liver cancer. Her goal is to grow a translational research program to improve UC Irvine patient care and outcome.

Dr. Abi-Jaoudeh is a fellow of SIR and a member of several other professional societies i.e. ASCO, RSNA, ARRS. She also serves as associate editor of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.
