Keith C. Hemmert, MD, is a faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and serves as the Medical Director for the Emergency Department at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). In this capacity, he has led a number of significant projects, including implementation of a split flow model of care in the HUP ED; implementation of a medical scribe program in the ED; coordinating the ED's move to a new physical plant that has a two floor layout, and implementing a unique admission load-leveling system across three EDs in the Penn system. His academic interests include analysis of causes of and strategies to mitigate ED crowding, analysis of the impact of a split flow care model; analysis of the impact of medical scribes; geriatric emergency care from an operational perspective. Dr. Hemmert also serves as the Associate Director of the Fellowship for Emergency Medicine Administration, Operations, and Leadership, a joint program between the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Hemmert completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he served as Chief Resident and was active in ED operations, including the implementation of a split flow throughput model and departmental construction projects. He attended New York University School of Medicine and received an AB, with honors, in Philosophy from Harvard University.
