Dr. Wesley Stepp is a PGY3 resident in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to residency, he completed his medical training at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where he was involved in many facets of ENT research, including work on human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers of the oropharynx, HPV’s role in sinonasal cancers. Prior to attending medical school, he completed a PhD in Microbiology & Immunology through the National Institutes of Health and Georgetown University, where he studied virology, specifically HPV and its role in manipulating host immune factors to establish a successful long-term infection.
Currently, he works with multidisciplinary research teams in both the Divisions of Head and Neck Oncology and Rhinology/Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at UNC-Chapel Hill to identify how viruses such as HPV and SARS-CoV2 manipulate the tissues of the head and neck to cause disease. When not in the hospital or doing research, he enjoys cycling, rock climbing and reading historical non-fiction.
