Senior Scientist, Professor
Carolinas Rehabilitation/Carolinas Medical Center; Wake Forest School of Medicine
Charlotte, North Carolina, United States
Dr. Hirsch is Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem North Carolina, and Senior Scientist and Faculty at Carolinas Rehabilitation, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Charlotte, NC, USA. His current research interests are in gait and balance and exercise-induced neuroplastic effects including biomarkers, mostly in Parkinson's disease. He was appointed Fellow of the ACRM in 2019. Dr. Hirsch has contributed to several ACRM scholarly diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. One example, in 2017, members of the ACRM Neurodegenerative Diseases Networking Group and the ACRM Program Committee developed and implemented a special symposium – The Women in Rehabilitation Science Symposium - honoring the scholarly contributions of women in rehabilitation science (currently presented annually at the ACRM National Conference Progress in Rehabilitation Research). The Women in Rehabilitation Science Special Symposium serves as a beacon model educational program and seeks to communicate with a sense of urgency to drive the highest level of excellence in rehabilitation research and scholarship by achieving equity and full participation of women in the field of rehabilitation science. Additionally, in 2017 Dr. Hirsch and the NDNG Awards Task Force members developed an award “the Women in Rehabilitation Science Award” honoring research and scholarship accomplishments of women in rehabilitation science. This award was approved by the Board of Governors in 2017 and given for the first time in 2018 and each year thereafter in recognition of world-class rehabilitation research conducted by a female scientist. Additionally, Dr. Hirsch and colleagues developed the NDNG-level Women in Neurodegenerative Disease Rehabilitation Science Award. The ACRM is driving a vision through its goal to increase mentorship supports for historically underrepresented scientists who conduct rehabilitation research. Dr. Hirsch‘s research mentorship experience is demonstrated by his participation on the following projects in the last four years: as faculty mentor on the NIH/NCCIH 1R13AT011146-01 (2020-2021) (Kim (PI): “Evidence-based Complementary Integrative Medicine: Cultivating Diversity in Research and Clinical Practice”, as faculty mentor on NIH/NHLBI K01HL12091 (2014-2019) (Lieberman (PI): “Nutrition Education for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury”, and as research mentor on ACL, NIDILRR. Switzer Research Fellowship Grant. (2019-2020) (Kim (PI): “Measuring Posttraumatic Growth in the Caregiving Family of Persons with a Brain Injury”. Additional mentorship experience at Carolinas Rehabilitation/Wake Forest SOM includes leadership to the Wake Forest Research Mentoring and Career Development Council, and research mentor to 15 PM&R Resident Physicians and a Brain Injury Fellow, Director of the Department of PM&R Residency Research Education Program at Carolinas Rehabilitation. In addition, Dr. Hirsch provides research mentorship leadership supports to rehabilitation scientists and scientist-clinicians on a national level through the ACRM Mentoring Task Force of the Career Development Networking Group, as past-Chair of the ACRM Neurodegenerative Diseases Networking Group Research Mentorship Program, and as co-Chair of the ACRM Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
