Community-Engaged Research for Brain Health

Since the inception of Patient-Oriented Research (POR), arguably one of the most transformative and ethical approach to knowledge generation in light of public research funding, new approaches including Community-Engaged Research (CEnR) has evolved to acknowledge the social role of tertiary institutions. Cutting-edge approaches have moved away from "health as illness" to support prevention in community settings (Langevin et al., 2021). This symposium introduces recent advancements in CEnR methods, and examine its distinctives in relation to POR. To make these abstract discussions more concrete, three preventive or rehabilitative studies on cognitive health will be presented, with emphases on their aims, methods, and outputs. Extended Q&A will focus on comparing POR and/or CEnR methods in these studies to distil general principles on how and when to use which approaches. The symposia will conclude with a sharing of challenges and best practices to support emerging scholars who are interested to use these methods.
