With the advent of surgical techniques and instruments, the clinical and radiographic outcomes of endodontic surgery have been dramatically improved. However, alteration of soft tissue including recession, loss of papilla and scarring may occur. In another word, surgery may solve the apical lesion but create a new soft tissue problem. Therefore, in the anterior zone, esthetics must be carefully evaluated. As an endodontist, it is our responsibility to understand the clinical parameters to evaluate and manage the surgical skills to prevent adverse outcomes of gingival wound healing. Furthermore, understanding our limitations as Endodontists and working with other specialists to deliver multidisciplinary treatment.
The goal of the presentation is to explain the parameters for pre-surgical evaluation and offer surgical guideline in terms of different clinical scenarios. Several clinical cases will be demonstrated to further illustrate surgical techniques and proper management in esthetic zone. This lecture will be a conversation between an endodontist and a periodontist. Dr. Shi will bring her expertise in surgery and soft tissue management as well as what is achievable during endodontic surgery.

Learning Objectives:

Define and evaluate aesthetics in endodontic surgery
Recognize the different techniques available to improve the aesthetic outcome in endodontic surgery and how to perform them
Discuss the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of each techniques and recognize when to refer to an another specialist
