Very low probability, high risk negative clinical outcomes can be catastrophic to the patient and the clinician. Because they are infrequent, they are not discussed much and tend to be characterized as “accidents” which we have no control over. They tend to be viewed as not really being preventable. This presentation will look at how applying cognitive psychology principles can help mitigate against their occurring. It will outline the strategy and principles behind developing a “risk” mindset and apply that to a variety of clinical situations to illustrate the principles.
