This lecture will discuss the ways in which nerve damage can occur in relation to endodontic treatment. This will include nerve damage from local anesthetic injections, nerve damage from endodontic preparation and sealants, nerve damage from dental implants and nerve damage from socket preservation procedures. It will discuss prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.

Learning Objectives:

To be familiar with the possible mechanisms by which a local anesthetic injection can cause damage to the inferior alveolar or lingual nerves and the most appropriate management.
To understand that endodontic treatment carried out posterior to the mental foramen carries a risk of involvement of the inferior alveolar nerve either with the instrumentation itself or with the endodontic paste or sealant. Appropriate measures for prevention, diagnosis, and management will be described.
Dental implants have the ability to damage nerves in a number of ways including direct trauma, hydrostatic pressure and possibly neuroma formation. Each of these scenarios will be discussed with regards to prevention, management, and treatment.
