As health care in the United States shifts from sick care to well care, referral patterns are shifting accordingly. Rehabilitation professionals with the skills to support health behavior change for reduction of disease burden will become more in demand in the coming years. The purpose of this session is to provide an introductory understanding of care through this lens of lifestyle medicine and how the lifestyle medicine movement’s resources can enhance rehabilitation practice and the effectiveness of the interprofessional team. Participants will hear from a Board certified Lifestyle Medicine Physician and Certified Lifestyle Medicine professionals from Occupational and Physical Therapy. This team will share examples of real healthcare reform from practice to academia. Participants will reflect on the potential opportunities for integrating evidence-based lifestyle medicine in a wide variety of settings and explore resources for professional development to create a vibrant role in the future of healthcare.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the six pillars of lifestyle medicine and how they intersect with rehabilitation practice.
Upon completion, participants will be able to identify strategies for integrating lifestyle medicine principles into direct care, interprofessional collaborations, expansion of practice settings, and enhancement of health promotion services.
Upon completion, participants will be able to develop strategies for interprofessional practice through a lifestyle medicine lens.
Upon completion, participants will be able to articulate the importance of and opportunities for rehabilitation practitioner’s professional development in lifestyle medicine.
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe where to access lifestyle medicine resources and recommended strategies for professional development in lifestyle medicine.
