Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

discover strategies that can be used to incorporate health care disparities and patient-centered outcomes within cardiovascular health services research;
identify common research methods, best practices, and Ontario-based data holdings for health administrative research; and
describe the processes required to evaluate the clinical effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and the ethical/legal/social implications of novel clinical and system interventions on patient health, population health, and the health care system.

The adoption and evaluation of public health and healthcare interventions to improve cardiovascular health extend beyond hospitals into communities. This session will introduce health services research with a focus on healthcare disparities, including but not limited to the study of sex, gender, race, ethnicity, Indigeneity, and other socioeconomic and sociodemographic characteristics in access to and outcomes after cardiovascular care. In addition, the session will describe the role of health administrative data and present concrete examples of utilizing provincial databases to conduct health services research. Lastly, the session will cover health technology assessment considerations, such as the application of health economics and economic evaluations to inform clinical decision-making and governmental reimbursement decisions for cardiovascular drugs, interventions, and technologies.
