Dr. Sucandy is a dual fellowship-trained surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery for conditions of the liver, pancreas and bile ducts. He is one of very few surgeons in the country to offer minimally invasive robotic liver resection to treat cancer and non-cancerous tumors.
Dr. Sucandy is originally from Indonesia where he completed his undergraduate education at the Catholic De Britto Jesuit College and his medical degree at the Airlangga University School of Medicine in Indonesia. He was then selected to join the Jefferson Health – Abington Memorial Hospital for his general surgery residency. After his residency education, Dr. Sucandy took towards the United States and was accepted into the University of Pittsburgh Medical School for a hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery fellowship and into Yale University School of Medicine for a fellowship in advanced GI/MIS and bariatric Surgery. He studied under his director from Pittsburgh, Dr. Geller, who is well known American surgery. Dr. Sucandy is a now very respected director of our practice here at AdventHealth.
From the very beginning of his journey he has been focused. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications. His research focus is on the makeup of cancer, particularly liver cancers, intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, colorectal cancer metastases to the liver, hepatocellular carcinomas, and gallbladder cancer. Some of these problems he sees from patients are: Gallbladder cancers that are clearly unresectable but have been through numerous neoadjuvant therapies and reoperative cholecystectomy operations, which are typically done robotically and minimally invasively.
In his 10 years of surgical training he’s worked with many great surgeons and clinicians at the nation’s best hospitals. He’s travelled to many major institutions in America, Europe, and Japan for sake of sharing the knowledge and techniques he has accumulated in Hepatopancreatobiliary surgery. Dr. Sucandy is truly an incredibly bright and polished man.
