Local exicision allows rectal tumor removal but does not address locoregional lymph nodes. The impact on bowel function is minimal but studies have shown high risk of recurrence. The surgical oncologist needs to be familiar with the indication, outcome and techniques of local excision including laparoscopic and robotic TAMIS as well as endoscopic submucosal excision. non-CME
