The risk of drug overdose is exponentially increased following release from correctional facilities. Utilizing modalities such as medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and harm reduction strategies can greatly reduce this risk. We will provide an overview of incorporating these into the continuum of care in correctional settings and during re-entry to improve individuals’ outcomes during incarceration and after release.

Learning Objectives:

Recognize the increased risk of overdose after incarceration and define why this risk is so high.
Identify barriers to reducing this risk in incarcerated individuals upon release and during re-entry.
Demonstrate techniques that can be implemented to overcome these barriers and reduce overdose risk in this population.
