The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus 2 (CoV-2) has posed unprecedented challenges to health care systems around the world. It is expected that the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic will be great and have a direct impact on people who experience stroke during this time. Specifically, people with stroke are: (1) seeking emergent care less frequently as compared to prior to the global pandemic, (2) being discharged immediately home or across the care continuum with shorter lengths of stay, and (3) experiencing post-stroke COVID-19 infections leading to an increase in hospital readmissions. This symposium is to describe ongoing challenges and opportunities to support the short- and long-term needs of people surviving stroke during the COVID-19 pandemic. We propose potential solutions across the care continuum to support a multi-level and interdisciplinary approach to addressing this major public health problem.
