Xiaolei Hu, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor in Rehabilitation Medicine at Umeå University, and works as a Senior Consultant Physiatrist, researcher and educator at Department of Neurorehabilitation, University Hospital of Umeå, Sweden. She is active in local, national and international organizations dealing with NeuroRehabilitation (primarily Stroke).
Dr. Hu is a Chair of the Stroke Special Interest Scientific Committee (Stroke-SISC) in European Society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (ESPRM). As an international delegate, Dr. Hu is representing the Swedish Society of Rehabilitation Medicine (SFRM) in ESPRM, the European Union of Medical Specialists - Section of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM section & Board of UEMS) and the International Society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM). Dr. Hu is also a fellow of American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (FACRM) and International Liaison and Executive Board in the Stroke iSIG ACRM. She is on the editorial board of the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine and the European Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine.
Dr. Hu’s research focuses on stroke rehabilitation, including evaluating rehabilitation needs with a digital tool Rehabkompassen® through a national multicenter RCT (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04915027), cognitive recovery and neuroplasticity (Project KOGNEST-fMRI), and implementation of evidence-based motor rehabilitations with high-intensity, task-specific training into the clinical practice (Project IMPRESS). Together with her broad international networks, Dr. Hu works on evaluating the post-stroke rehabilitation service within Europe (project SUSTAIN-EU), traumatic brain injury, Covid and e-health. Dr Hu’s research team consists of three doctoral students, research nurses, RCT process coordinator, biomedical engineers and statisticians.
As a senior consultant physiatrist, she leads and co-operates with the multidisciplinary teams to deliver the inpatient and outpatient rehabilitations among persons with various neurodisabilities on daily basis. In addition, Dr. Hu has rich teaching and supervising experiences within undergraduate and graduate educations.
