Brain injury significantly affects aspects of an individual’s life, and can be caused by impairments relating to the injury (e.g., lack of physical function, decreased cognitive capacity, emotional status). Impaired self-awareness (i.e., lack of insight), including decreased self-regulation and self-knowledge, is experienced by most people after brain injury. Additionally, negative self-perceptions and negative adjustments to injury is highly prevalent. These complex alterations to one’s self after brain injury can affect engagement in therapy, acceptance of intervention strategies, and self-efficacy to achieve recovery potential. These issues can have direct impact on health and participation in everyday life. There is a need to facilitate learning and discussion on topics related to changes after brain injury and clinical implications. The outcomes of this symposium will provide knowledge for clinicians and researchers to engage in rehabilitation practices to support positive changes in one’s self after brain injury.

Learning Objectives:

1) Describe clinical implications of self-awareness and self-identity changes after brain injury.
2) Define evidence-based assessment approaches and interventions for addressing self-identity and self-awareness after brain injury.
3) Discuss the complexities of research on self after brain injury and identify future research priorities and opportunities.
