The U.S. Department of Energy considers hydrogen an attractive clean fuel for transportation and power generation. Hydrogen is an energy carrier that can be produced from different sources, including steam reforming of natural gas, electrolysis of water, biomass, and biological processes involving bacteria and microalgae. The energy requirements for hydrogen production can be fulfilled by different renewable and non-renewable sources, namely nuclear power, fossil fuels, and solar- and wind-driven processes. A recent report by McKinsey & Company projected that, by 2030, hydrogen economy in the U.S. may generate an annual revenue of $140B while supporting 700,000 jobs. Looking at longer term, hydrogen could fulfill 14% of the U.S. energy demand by 2050. Depending on availability, this panel session will feature presentations by four to six panelists, representing the public sector, utilities, and industry. The panelists will present an overview of (i) fundamentals of hydrogen fuel, including its carbon footprint, (ii) the role of hydrogen fuel in lowering future emissions, (iii) hydrogen in gas turbines and its impact on SCR systems, and (iv) hydrogen infrastructure.
