Led by an Executive Committee, joined by 40 additional judges, behavioral health, and court experts, and funded by the State Justice Institute, the National Judicial Task Force to Examine State Court’s Response to Mental Illness spent the last two years developing tools, resources, best practices, and policy recommendations for the state courts to help in their efforts to effectively respond to the needs of individuals with serious mental illness. The Final Report and Recommendations, was released on October 25, 2022. A strategic behavioral health plan is being developed under the leadership of the Conferences of Chief Justices and State Court Administrators which will guide the field going forward. Come to this session to hear the latest updates and learn what you can do to partner with your local court system as they improve their responses to individuals with serious mental illnesses. The Missouri Behavioral Health Association will provide examples of collaboration and lessons learned working with their local and state courts.

Examine the national effort to reform state courts serving individuals with mental health disorders.
Explore initiatives to reduce individuals being held pre-trial and recidivism.
Identify the recommendations made to state courts that are supported by community mental health treatment organizations and clinical leaders.
