Public safety has an important role in partnering with and implementing harm reduction programs to prevent overdose. Presentations from three pilot projects will demonstrate how public safety professionals, from police and parole officers to jail and prison staff, can help reduce the risk of overdose for those with substance use and substance use challenges in the criminal justice system. We’ll also provide resources at the intersection of harm reduction and public safety in BIPOC communities support capacity building in serving the most impacted populations.

Learning Objectives:

Describe the barriers to implementing harm reduction programming with public safety partners.
Understand the touchpoints and resources available for public safety professionals to enhance and support harm reduction services to people who use drugs and people with substance use disorders.
Discuss the results of a pilot program to provide screening, assessment, resources and harm reduction services to those currently in or recently released from rural jail.
