Session Description: The presentation is created for all audiences who require increased knowledge on infection prevention and control in dental settings. Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) occur in the dental setting. However, there are no established guidelines for dental practices to identify HAI. There is a lack of research that investigates the incidence of dental HAI in patients after dental treatments. This presentation will educate the audience on how to develop and operationalize a process to detect dental HAI. This in turn will lead to better patient outcomes and safe infection prevention and control practices. The developed process will show how surveillance based on a standardized definition and criteria to identify infections, subsequent analysis of data and timely reporting to patients and to staff can lead to improvements. This can be by interventions, patient treatment, education and training, and/or appropriate antibiotic usage. The presentation will focus on the development of a dental HAI surveillance program. It will utilize data from dental clinics tracking HAI, as well as from dental clinics that do not have an HAI surveillance process. Over time, there is a likelihood that trends in dental HAI may occur. Prompt attention will be given to these HAI so that the root cause can be identified. This program can be replicated and implemented in dental settings.
