Police recruitment and hiring is a major public safety concern. While many agencies are desperately searching for innovative and successful recruiting strategies to attract and hire officers through external methods, the Charleston, South Carolina, Police Department developed an internal evidence-based approach to gauge what attracted, and ultimately led to, the successful hiring of their police cadets. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach, incorporating survey and interview methods of data collection and analysis. The presenters will discuss the research findings and recommendations, the importance of internal agency evidence-based practices, and the process of turning research into effective recruitment and hiring strategies.
