F3 - Addressing Bullying in the Children with Special Health Care Needs Population

Full Description: According to the 2019-2020 National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH), children with special health care needs (CSHCN) are 25% more likely to be bullied than their non-special health care need counterparts, and children with complex medical conditions (CMC) are 30% more likely to experience bullying. However, despite this knowledge that CSHCN experience bullying disproportionately than their peers without special health care needs, gaps persist in the availability of evidenced-based practices to impact the experience of bullying for this population. Each state exists on a continuum of strategies to address bullying among CSHCN ranging from exploring the data, to creating engagement opportunities, to established Youth and Parent Advisory Councils. In Spring 2021, HHS Regions 4 and 5 Title V programs began convening a Special Interest Group to discuss opportunities to close these gaps, share best practices and lessons learned, and facilitating engagement from youth and young adults to inform programming.

Join this interactive session, moderated by HRSA/MCHB, with panelists from across HHS Regions 4 and 5, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Florida, Ohio, and Michigan, to learn about the spectrum of activities and discuss statewide initiatives to improve these outcomes. Tennessee will share their success in developing and maintaining a Youth Advisory Council. Learn from Wisconsin about their exploration into addressing bullying for this population in their state. Florida will share information on their innovative collaborative to address bullying. Ohio will share their strategies to address bullying among CYSHCN, including two full-time parent consultants and numerous partnerships across state agencies. Michigan will share information on their small grants initiative to support communities in addressing bullying for CYSHCN. The second half of the presentation will engage attendees and panelists in a robust conversation regarding the bullying experience for children with special health care needs, idea sharing, and group brainstorming.
