Head and neck cancer survivors are a large, diverse, complex, and growing population with a plethora of functional impairments that can severely impact function and quality of life. To help these survivors obtain and maintain their highest possible functional level requires clinicians from multiple disciplines working in an integrated fashion. Unfortunately, cancer rehabilitation programs often fall short in terms of fully understanding and meeting the needs of these complex patients. Integrating cancer rehabilitation within the survivorship model enriches care and provides essential and often unavailable services. Optimizing and expanding cancer rehabilitation programing requires an understanding of the gaps in care and presents an opportunity to realize the full potential of cancer rehabilitation. We will review the latest developments in oncologic treatment and highlight the complex medical and physical impairments common to head and neck cancer survivors. The evidence and value of comprehensive cancer rehabilitation in survivorship care will be emphasized.

Learning Objectives:

Describe developments and current treatment practices for head and neck cancer.
Identify and treat common neuro-musculoskeletal functional impairments experienced by head and neck cancer survivors.
Recognize opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and implement comprehensive cancer rehabilitation programming for head and neck cancer survivors.
