Treatment for individuals with upper limb loss has changed dramatically in the past several years with the addition of targeted muscle reinnervation surgery, pattern recognition prosthetic control, and virtual reality. We will discuss the newest technology, surgery, prosthetic, and therapy techniques used in caring for individuals with upper limb loss, including the research conducted at the Center for Bionic Medicine at the Shirley Ryan Abilitylab.

Learning Objectives:

Describe basic concepts and benefits of Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR).
Understand historical evolution of pattern recognition control.
Compare impact of TMR and pattern recognition on both transradial and transhumeral prosthetic fittings and training.
Describe how virtual reality could be used as a treatment for phantom limb pain as well as a training and evaluation tool for myoelectric prosthetic control.
