Despite the distributed, international nature of research networks, COVID-19 moved teaching, research, and collaboration to online environments in a way that had not previously been experienced. One of the outcomes of this change was increased adoption of open tools and resources for maintaining effective and meaningful collaboration. Many of these practices have been in use across initiatives at NCEAS for several years, and we were able to use this wealth of experience to support virtualized research in the community. Here, we introduce some best practices leveraging open tools and data, and for working in collaborative teams across space and time.
