Land Acknowledgement
Tina Calderon, Gabrielino Tongva and Ventuereño Chumash
We Honor the Traditional Caretakers of Puvuunga known today as Long Beach. We acknowledge these lands as home to the Tongva people as well as a sacred meeting place for the Tongva and surrounding Native Nations where Spiritual practices and gatherings were held. Puvuunga is one of the many living grounds of the Tongva. We acknowledge the living grounds to include the San Fernando Valley to Huntington Beach, east along the Santa Ana River to Corona and Riverside, back along the Foothills and within the San Gabriel and Angeles Forest Mountains, also the four Southern Channel Islands;Catalina, Santa Barbara, San Nicholas and San Clemente
Today the Tongva share their home lands with relatives from many other Nations from around the United States and the World. It is our responsibility as guests on this land to not just acknowledge the land but affirm and support its original peoples by creating genuine and reciprocal relationships and tangible support to help these communities thrive in ways that center their ancestral knowledge.
As we find a home in this state, may we always walk gently upon the land with love and respect for the plants, water, animals, insects and people. Thanks to our Tongva relatives, we now, too, take on the responsibility of being good relatives and stewards of the land.
