Climate change may be the ultimate disruptor to coastal New Jersey. Sea level rise and frequent “sunny-day flooding” challenge local officials’ ability to protect residents.
Coastal towns responded to Hurricane Sandy's impact in different ways, including innovative use of reverse fiscal-impact analyses to drive decisions. They also employed public engagement and education, relocation programs, and physical improvements. Local officials describe their responses to the storm — efforts that continue 10 years later
Sandy's impacts also include gentrification and loss of affordable housing. What once were homes for many working-class families are now houses affordable only to the wealthy.
