Critical Communication Skills for Planners

Planners regularly attend meetings and make presentations to planning boards, legislators, and the public. Many do not realize the unintended messages they convey. We all are hard-wired to react emotionally and we do, often with less-than-desirable outcomes. How can we manage those reactions?

Imagine if all of our relationships with coworkers, supervisors, applicants, and the public were easier. Presenters share practical communication skills to help us listen better, handle bullies, or be more empathetic. Improving planners’ emotional intelligence skills will foster more harmonious workplaces and provide better tools for understanding their communities. This, in turn, will lead to plans that better reflect the communities for which they were designed.
