Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) populations have historically faced obstacles in accessing healthcare. Recent upsurges in anti-TGD political rhetoric and legislation within the United States, specifically with regard to gender-affirming healthcare, has further intensified the adversity experienced by this already marginalized community. In working to provide inclusive and justice-centered clinical environments, providers and healthcare institutions have the power to improve health outcomes, and overall quality of life, for TGD individuals. This presentation will provide first-hand narratives and recommendations on engaging with, and empowering, this patient-base, including discussion of core components to ensure an equitable and successful transgender health program.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the unique experiences of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) communities in accessing healthcare, and how to promote affirming clinical environments.
Articulate the importance of peer support/peer delivered services, and integration of behavioral health, in/into gender-affirming care.
Identify core concepts in developing a community-engaged, patient-centered, and justice-oriented transgender health program.
