While there is increasing evidence to suggest that male genital lichen sclerosus (LS) is driven by chronic exposure of genital epithelium to urine, this association is not as clear in females. We sought to determine whether urinary incontinence (UI) affects outcomes in female patients with LS; specifically, we studied whether these patients have increased risk of progressing to differentiated vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (dVIN). Our case-control study found that although there was no difference in prevalence of UI in women with and without dVIN, there was a trend towards a greater portion of women undergoing repeat excisions for management of dVIN in women with UI.
