Biographical Sketch for
Richard Nance, MSHHA, MSW, LCSW
Adjunct Instructor: Utah Valley University and University of Utah
Richard holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Brigham Young University (1995), a Certificate in Drug and Alcohol counseling from the University of Utah (1993), and a Masters in Health Administration from the University of Alabama in Birmingham (1981). He is a member of NASW, and the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC). He served as Director of the Utah County Department of Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Treatment from 1998 until 2020. His work has included hospital administration, counseling with adults, children, and youth, and adults with substance use disorders. Current activities include participation on the Utah Substance Abuse and Mental Health Coordinating Council Behavioral Health Workforce Work Group, Utah Legislative Alcohol Policy Workgroup, Utah Prevention Advisory Council, and various other state and national committees and work groups related to substance use disorder advocacy, treatment and prevention. Richard is an adjunct faculty member at Utah Valley University (UVU) where he teaches Introduction to Professional Development (ethics) for substance abuse counseling students. Mr. Nance also serves on the UVU Substance Use Pevention Coalition and two UVU boards: the MSW Advisory Board and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean’s Advisory board. He has been the Chair of the organizing committee for the annual UVU Conference on Addictions since 2009.
