When someone is confident in their smile, their recovery journey changes. Whether they are experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge, oral health is an overlooked but critical piece of their recovery that can impact a person’s ability to engage in social activities, educational/career pursuits and other social systems. Despite this connection, these services have been historically undertreated and disconnected with stark disparities in access to care for marginalized communities. When oral health, mental health and substance use treatment services are coordinated and integrated, they have the potential to improve recovery and the ability to thrive.

Learning Objectives:

Discuss the importance of integrating oral health, mental health and substance use treatment services and the opportunities for community health providers to improve integration and coordination of oral health services.
Examine the impacts of incorporating oral health services on marginalized communities and communities of color and opportunities for addressing health disparities through increased oral health integration.
