Findings of a recent study to evaluate the system of care (SOC) approach (specifically the CERT model) to combat a substance abuse problem in a rural community can be used as guidance when developing a community response to substance use in any rural setting. Based on data analysis of stakeholder interviews, seven themes were identified, including systems of care, key resources, risk factors, protective factors, barriers, outreach and peer support. The study highlighted essential areas to consider when developing and implementing a substance abuse response using a SOC approach.
