In July 2022, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline became the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, giving people in emotional distress an easy-to-remember, three-digit number to connect to free and confidential support. When the new number went live, states were in various stages of readiness to support their local and regional crisis call centers and to adhere to best practices for crisis response. The result has been that what happens during and after the call – from the ability to dispatch a mobile crisis team or refer for an urgent appointment or treatment – has varied from state to state. In this session, we will see outcomes from one early adopter state that began many of the best practices in January 2022, six months ahead of the official launch, and how the launch of 988 has impacted crisis response to its citizens.
