The California Behavioral Health and Wellness Initiative is a bold and innovative five-year project to assist behavioral health agencies implement tobacco-free campus policies and evidence-based tobacco cessation treatment that was established in 2018. The success of this program can be widely implemented and adapted to create lasting systemic change among organizations serving the behavioral health community. We will share lessons learned and a grantee will discuss how her program's succeeded including the importance of providing NRT/pharmacotherapy for both staff and clients, and how to partner with the state quitline to receive essential cessation resources.
Learning Objectives:
Define how increased smoking prevalence among the behavioral health population is a health equity issue and how to address cessation in priority populations.
Analyze how to take a substance use disorder (SUD) agency tobacco-free and incorporate smoking cessation services into treatment plans to increase quit attempts and successes.
Apply comprehensive wellness programs, such as nutrition, gardening, exercise and trauma-informed yoga that can be offered to clients to bolster a smoke-free lifestyle.
