The vast majority of individuals who display mental illness symptoms don’t commit acts of violence. In reality, mental illness symptoms are only a potential contributing factor in a constellation of other factors, and mental illness shouldn’t be viewed as a causal explanation. Violence is a multi-faceted issue with no singular cause or solution. Even so, mental health treatment organizations are more frequently being asked to assess safety risk. Explore the role of treatment organizations in this process and how best to work with the individuals they assess.

Learning Objectives:

Identify the advantages of structured risk assessment instruments when assessing the likelihood that a patient presents a risk of being a danger to others.
Distinguish safety planning appropriate for suicide risk from safety planning appropriate for patients who present a risk of being a danger to others.
Examine the process of safety planning for patients who present a risk of being a danger to others.
Participants will be able to apply the principles for safety planning for risk of danger to others to hypothetical patients.
