Course Description:
Background: Many, perhaps most, general urologists are uncomfortable with immunocompromised kidney transplant candidates and recipients. Learners will take back to practices the following: (1) the three areas of contraindications for kidney transplantation that may require urological assessment; (2) assessment of the urinary tract before transplantation; (3) the concept of required, formal treatment planning conferences that include transplant nurse coordinators, social service, financial counseling, pharmacy, nutrition, nephrology and surgery before treatment assignment; (4) options for urinary tract reconstruction at the time of transplantation; (5) management of stents, tubes and drains after transplantation; (6) the concept of a public, mandatory outcome registry; (7) diagnosis and management of urological complications after transplantation; (8) erectile dysfunction and pregnancy before and after transplantation; and (9) useful websites.
