Dr. Barry is Professor of Urology and Professor of Surgery, Emeritus, Division of Abdominal Organ Transplantation at the Oregon Health & Science University. He was Chief of Urology from 1979-2008 when he stepped down to be President of the American Urological Association (AUA). He was Director of Kidney Transplantation from 1976 to 2009, and he stepped down on the 50th anniversary of that program. From 2001-2002 he was President of the American Board of Urology. He is a Past- President of the Western Section of the AUA, the Urologic Society for Transplantation and Renal Surgery, and of the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. In 2011-2012, he was a panel member on the NIH State-of-the-Science Conference on the role of active surveillance in the management of prostate cancer. He was the 2014 recipient of the Society of Government Services H. Godwin Stevenson Award, the 2015 recipient of the AUA's Ramon Guiterras Award, the 2016 Laureate of the Societe Internationale d'Urologie Astellas European Foundation, the 2018 Ig Nobel Reproductive Medicine Prize for the Stamp Test, the AUA's 2019 Didusch Award, and the 2021 Keyes Medal from the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. He is currently a 0.50 FTE surgeon at the same institution where he has spent his entire academic career.
