Course Description: TThe mentor-mentee dyad represents a dynamic and reciprocal relationship between an advanced career incumbent and a less experienced individual that promotes the development of both. A healthy mentor-mentee relationship is invaluable in both career advancement and in personal growth and satisfaction for both individuals, regardless of practice setting (i.e., academia versus private practice). Importantly, mentorship can span the domains of clinical/surgical, professional and personal development across a broad range of practice and professional settings. Unfortunately, however, many physicians and allied health professionals have never received formal training on how to be a good mentor or mentee. This course will explore the mentor-mentee relationship by way of reviewing and defining key characteristics of a healthy and effective relationship that is symbiotic and mutually beneficial to both parties. It will then dive deeper into defining ideal qualities of mentors and mentees individually. The course will also provide actionable tools and strategies that can be easily applied to enhance this relationship, inclusive of how to build effective mentorship teams and use of career development plans. Finally, the learner will develop their own action plan of how they will embody these teachings and become a stronger mentor and mentee.
