My name is Jee Soo Park, MD, PhD and I am currently working as the principal researcher at the Department of Urology, Urological Science Institute, Yonsei University College of Medicine. My research interest is mainly on kidney cancer. Our research team has been working on finding biomarkers for aggressive small renal cell cancer which was also my topic for PhD thesis. We have found several new prognostic biomarkers for aggressive small renal cell cancer. We found that one of those genes, DDX11, is associated with aggressiveness of kidney cancer and could be the potential target for the PARP inhibitor. We have broadened our interests in kidney cancer biomarkers using circulating tumor DNA. Kidney cancer is the area where many therapeutic advances are happening. Targeted therapies, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and many new therapies are available for kidney cancer treatments. Since immune checkpoint inhibitors are becoming standard treatments for kidney cancer, we focused on enhancing the effects of immune checkpoint inhibitors using oncolytic virus. We have demonstrated that using our oncolytic virus, we could enhance therapeutic effects of immune checkpoint inhibitors by modulating cold tumor immune microenvironment into hot tumor immune microenvironment. Now we are under investigation of unraveling the role of perirenal fat in kidney cancer progression and tumor immune microenvironment. We have found that browning of perirenal fat is associated with cancer progression and might be associated with decreased immune activity. We will perform metabolomics of cancer cells and immune cells in the future.
Although our main interest is on kidney cancer, we have performed several studies regarding bladder cancer. We have performed single cell RNA sequencing for BCG non-responsive patients and found several interesting findings that will be published. Moreover, we are now collecting fecal and urine samples from bladder cancer patients to perform microbiome analysis.
