Dr Ashish M. Kamat is Professor of Urology and Cancer Research at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. He specializes in the management of patients with genitourinary (GU) cancers, with specific attention to immunotherapy of urothelial cancers. Towards this end he has led several efforts to refine our understanding of this disease space and has developed and led clinic trials in this arena. His active research portfolio has resulted in over 430 publications.
Dr Kamat serves as President of International Bladder Cancer Group (IBCG), co-President of the International Bladder Cancer Network (IBCN), and Chair of the SIU Innovators Committee. He is a member of numerous scientific committees dedicated to GU cancer research and education, including AUA, SUO, ASCO, SIU. He has served on the board of these organizations, including in planning committees for national and international meetings such as ASCO GU, AUA and European Urological Association (EAU). He is an alumnus of the AUA Leadership Program.
Dr Kamat also devotes significant time to education – having served as Fellowship Director of the program at MD Anderson from 2005 – 2016, and continues to actively mentor fellows, resident, and international visiting scientists in his research program. He is on the editorial board of leading journals and serves as an Associate Editor for European Urology Oncology and the Editor for UroToday’s Bladder Cancer Center of Excellence.
Additionally, Dr Kamat is active in national and global patient advocacy efforts, has won the Compassionate Doctor Award from patient groups and is listed in Who's Who in Medicine and Best Doctors in America. In 2016, in recognition of his efforts, an endowment was created in his honor, the "Wayne B. Duddlesten Professorship in Honor of Dr Ashish Kamat" supporting work in Cancer Research and Education at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
