Dr. Lai is the Gerald L. Andriole Professor of Urologic Surgery, and Director of Research in the Division of Urologic Surgery, with a joint appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University. He is a clinician-scientist with basic and clinical research focus on lower urinary tract disorders including interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), overactive bladder (OAB), and bladder/voiding dysfunctions. He has been continuously funded by the NIH for over a decade. He is the PI of the NIDDK MAPP (Multi-disciplinary Approach to the Study of Chronic Pelvic Pain) Research Network, investigating the pathophysiology, phenotyping, and natural history of chronic bladder pain (IC/BPS). He is also the PI and Chair of the NIDDK LURN (Symptoms of Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction Research Network), studying the clinical phenotyping of lower urinary tract disorders such as OAB and urinary incontinence. He is the PI of NIDDK Urinary Stone Disease Research Network (USDRN). Dr. Lai has a strong track-record of publication and have authored over 185 papers in basic, translational, and clinical research on bladder disorders. He is a recipient of the Rising Stars in Urology Research Award from the American Urological Association (AUA), and the Paul Zimskind Award from the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU).
