In this symposium, common practices in colorectal poorly supported by evidence will be debunked. The evidence in support of or against staple and suture line reinforcement for anastomotic protection, omental flaps to fill the empty pelvis, routine use of surgical drains, and wound management strategies to mitigate SSI will be critically reviewed. The role of dietary fiber in managing diverticulitis and postoperative patients will also be evaluated and evidence-based recommendations will be balanced against real-world practice and surgeon preferences.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Recognize the evidence in support of or against suture or staple line reinforcement after the creation of bowel anastomoses, routine use of surgical drains, and various wound care protocols to minimize the risk of SSI.
Explain the evidence in support of or against the use of dietary fiber in the postoperative setting and in the management of diverticulitis patients.
