Session Description: This session will cover the basic components of typical healthcare ventilation systems, and the terms used to describe their performance. Additionally, it will explore the relationships between ventilation systems and the potential transmission of organisms within the healthcare environment. Key topics will include, outbreak management, differential pressure relationships, filtration efficiencies, and relative humidity. Tapping into their combined 60 plus years of experience in hundreds of facilities, the presenters will describe typical communication challenges between Infection Prevention and Building teams, and how to avoid them.

Identify the major components of hospital ventilation systems and understand the acronyms used to routinely describe them and their performance.
Understand key characteristics of hospital ventilation systems that influence the potential for spreading airborne infectious organisms.
