Session Description: The purpose of this presentation is to review the core NHSN surveillance definitions and their application in device-associated and BSI Surveillance. Review includes Infection Window Period (IWP), POA (Present on Admission), SBAP (Secondary Bacteremia Application Period), RIT (Repeat Infection Timeframe) and other considerations for application of device associated and BSI surveillance definition. This presentation will take a closer look at three BSI Categories: laboratory confirmed bloodstream infection (LCBI), mucosal barrier injury (MBI) laboratory confirmed bloodstream infection (MBI LCBI), and central-line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) exclusion criteria. Case studies will be used for deeper understanding and application of these concepts. Although these concepts have been in place for several years, a better understanding of BSI criteria and accurate reporting of these events remain an area of interest.

Provide an overview of the general NHSN surveillance definitions, device-associated definitions, and laboratory confirmed bloodstream (LCBI) infection criteria
Review criteria to meet the mucosal barrier injury (MBI) LCBI criteria and identify the central line bloodstream associated (CLABSI) exclusions
Apply NHSN surveillance concepts and criteria to clinical case scenarios
