Session Description: This session will describe the development of a system-wide quality and safety framework at a pediatric academic pediatric medical center and its application in prioritizing, monitoring, and evaluating system-wide initiatives including infection prevention and control (IPC). Many organizations have integrated IPC in broader quality programs. This presentation describes how a large health system used a systematic framework to integrate IPC in the quality and safety framework rather than approaching IPC as a distinct set of initiatives. Building on the strategic plan of a major pediatric hospital, a quality and safety framework was developed and applied in monitoring and evaluating quality and safety initiatives including IPC efforts. The SCOPE framework—encompassing safety, clinical outcomes, population health equity, and experience—can broaden understanding of infection prevention (IPC) and control measures and their impact on patients. Specific examples of the use of the framework on IPC will be reviewed. For example, use of a formal framework including the impact on health equity and health disparities has highlighted the need for consideration of racial and ethnic differences in preventable healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). In addition, the framework has broadened discussion of and focus on the influence of IPC initiatives on the patient experience and patients’ perceptions and responses to isolation, HAI-prevention efforts, and hand hygiene. Data on the frequency of the inclusion of IPC process and outcomes, including HAI rates, during senior leadership reporting and planning across specialties and specialty service lines will be presented.
