Session Description: The session will explore the current body of literature and research exploring health equity and hospital-associated infections. Health disparities are well-documented and explored. The impact of health disparities on hospital-associated infections and surgical site infections is less well known. In a landscape with growing awareness and widening socioeconomic gaps, the adequacy of universal prevention strategies needs to be assessed. This session will overlay the health equity and health disparities discussions with hospital-associated infection prevention. It will identify how to start assessing the efficiency of your infection prevention program in the face of a diverse patient population and whether there is a need for enhanced education and intervention. This session will add to the healthcare diversity, equity, and inclusion discussions and connect infection prevention even more clearly to public health. This is a valuable session for infection Preventionists at all levels of their career.

Learning Objectives:

Explain the current body of research and data on the impact of health inequities on hospital-associated infection and surgical site infection prevention.
Assess the efficacy of the current prevention strategies in preventing healthcare-associated infections in patients susceptible to harm based on social determinants of health.
Perform a risk assessment for their facility or organization to determine whether additional measures or interventions are needed to prevent hospital-associated infections in their patient population.
