Session Description: Environmental cleaning practices and strategies in the healthcare environment are of increasing interest in public health and healthcare. Contamination of surfaces, including high-touch surfaces in the room and reusable patient care equipment that is moved between rooms, can lead to transmission to patients and contamination of healthcare personnel. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed core components every healthcare facility should consider adopting as their overarching environmental infection control and prevention strategy, along with specific activities, to prevent infections transmitted via surfaces in the patient care environment. For the first part of the presentation, the presenters will describe the Core Components of Cleaning and Disinfection in Hospitals (Core Components) and provide examples of how to apply the Core Components in healthcare settings. Subsequently, the presenters will describe a recent assessment of healthcare environmental cleaning practices through key informant interviews with infection preventionists and environmental services managers.
