Name: Marc Coulombe, RN, BSN, CIC.
Marc Coulombe is a bachelor-prepared nurse, who has been in healthcare for 45 years. He began his career as a corpsman in the United States Navy, receiving advanced training in urology. Besides providing direct patient care and therapy, he functioned as a radiology technician, surgical technician, laboratory technician and endoscopic technician. Following his discharge from the service, Marc obtained his RN license. Marc worked as an inpatient nurse in numerous inpatient units including dialysis, pulmonology, and surgery. He also has extensive experience working in multiple intensive care units, including neurotrauma.
For the past eight years, Marc has worked as an Infection Preventionist at WakeMed Hospital, which is a Level 1 trauma center located in Raleigh North Carolina. Prior to joining the Infection Prevention team, Marc served as the ICU liaison for infection prevention. He has his certification in Infection Prevention and is a long-standing member of the APIC Chapter in North Carolina. Marc also is an approved provider for the North Carolina Statewide Program for Infection Control and Epidemiology (SPICE), an education program required by all healthcare practices in North Carolina that perform invasive procedures.
In his role as an Infection Preventionist at WakeMed,, Marc covers all inpatient and outpatient areas that perform high level disinfection, including all areas that use scopes. He regularly teaches classes on high level disinfection (HLD) to staff performing HLD at WakeMed. Marc has been a speaker for the local SGNA chapter on the topic of endoscope reprocessing and cleaning verification. He is responsible for reviewing/updating WakeMed policies, including ones on high level disinfection. He frequently consults on construction projects where the area will be performing high level disinfection.
