Katherine M. Trail BSEd, MSN-PH, RN, CIC, CHC is the director of infection prevention at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. Katherine started her IP career as a solo infection preventionist (IP) at Mary & Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville, KY in 2016, expanding the program and growing the department to include multiple IPs. She has developed and successfully implemented many programs including a nurse-driven indwelling urinary catheter removal protocol, pre- and post-operative MRSA decolonization, and opened and managed both employee and community mass covid vaccine clinics. Katherine recently completed greenbelt training with a project implementing a foley free ED program reducing indwelling urinary catheter utilization by fifty percent. Katherine holds certifications in both infection control and healthcare contractor as well as being a designated trainer for the certified heatlhcare environmental services technician program through the Association for the Healthcare Environment. Katherine is a lifelong learner and enjoys being a mentor for other infection preventionists. In her spare time she enjoys reading and spending time at the beach.
